Stargazing 2014
1 Stargazing 2014
Octopus Publishing Group 2013 1849072906 / 9781849072908 Paperback New book 229 x 161 mm, 176 grams 64 pages, Illustrations
Philip's Stargazing 2014 is a concise guide to the northern night sky, helping starwatchers to see the year's most fascinating events! Whether observing with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope, the guide is suitable for use between latitudes 40-N and 60-N, including Britain and Ireland, Europe as far south as Rome, and Canada and the northern USA as far south as Philadelphia. Each chapter (one for each month of the year) has a colour star map, created by Wil Tirion, showing the positions and phases of the Moon, the positions of the planets, and other useful information. Each month also includes a constellation described in detail; special events during the month, such as eclipses; a featured astronomical object, usually a deep-sky target; plus an astrophotograph, with details of how it was taken. The Solar System Almanac explains the movement of the planets, with particular attention paid to their positions in 2014. Solar and lunar eclipses, meteor showers and comets are also described. Exploring the Deep Sky provides a list of recommended deep-sky objects. The observer can use the monthly charts to discover which constellations are on view, and then use this information to plan deep-sky observing. The book concludes with an Equipment Review. Here Robin Scagell, author of Philip's Stargazing with a Telescope, provides a round-up of what's new in observing technology, from the latest brands of telescope to the best webcams.

Bletchley Park - The Code-Breakers of Station X, Michael Smith
4 Michael Smith Bletchley Park - The Code-Breakers of Station X
Shire Library 2013 0747812152 / 9780747812159 Paper Back New Book Ref Office 210 x 149 mm, 132 grams
Bletchley Park, known to those who worked there as Station X, was the scene of one of the greatest Allied triumphs of the Second World War. The breaking of the Nazi Enigma cyphers by Britain's wartime code-breakers continues to fascinate, with well over 100,000 people visiting the scene of their successes every year. Bletchley Park provided the intelligence that ensured Allied victories in the Battle of Atlantic, the war in North Africa and, most crucially, the D-Day invasion of Europe, and it was also the birthplace of the modern computer. The code-breakers were led by men like Dilly Knox and Alan Turing, but also included thousands of 'ordinary' people, the vast majority of them young women. This book contains previously unpublished photographs showing them at work and play. It not only explains how their work influenced the battle against Nazi Germany and its Italian and Japanese allies, but also describes how they lived and loved.
