First published in
1959 and long out of print, this new edition faithfully reproduces
Denis Val Baker's original text recording the vibrant art scene in the
St Ives area. Even by the late 1950's traveling to the far South West
of England required stamina, as many holiday-makers of a certain age
will testify. Having made the long trek to St Ives, you would be
aware that here was a unique community where native Cornishmen
long steeped in a traditional way of life based on religious
non-conformity and the sea rubbed shoulders with the leading
avant-garde artists of the day. It is appropriate in this centenary
year of the birth of Barbara Hepworth that this book is available once
more and should feature on the bookshelf of anyone who has a passing
interest in our 20th Century Art heritage.

Much
has been written about Fats Waller - in this new biography Alyn
Shipton argues that Waller's talents as a songwriter, show composer and
recording and broadcasting artist have never been fully appreciated. This
book covers the whole of Fats' life from his upbringing in Harlem, his
involvement with "rent parties" and films. Of particular
interest is a chapter on his European tour shortly before the outbreak
of the Second World War. The final chapter provides a comprehensive
survey of Waller's recordings, including information on their reissue
for the CD era. |

This excellent book from Sutton Publishing tells the full story of how British scientists and engineers invented weapons and equipment for secret agents of the Special Operations Executive during the Second World War. All aspects of SOE are detailed - sabotage, camouflage, weapons, sea borne craft and communications. Of particular interest is the chapter on The Wireless Section initially established in a small laboratory at Bletchley Park and which subsequently moved to a mansion The Frythe located at Welwyn. All of the types of radios used such as the S phone, the B2 suitcase phone, the Miniature Communications Receiver (MRC 1) and the 51/1 transmitter are examined in detail. The authors both have backgrounds associated with SOE locations, Fredric Boyce having worked as a mechanical engineer with ICI at The Frythe, near Welwyn, whilst Douglas Everett was plucked from postgraduate research at Balliol College, Oxford to bolster SOE's scientific effort, for which he was awarded the MBE in 1945. Sadly, Douglas Everett died in 2002 before seeing this book (which is dedicated to him) published. |

The author has been a writer and broadcaster for more than forty years, and was one of BBC television's first newscaster. He has written widely on the Royal Family and related subjects including an official biography of the Princess Royal and what has been described as the definitive work on the Royal Yacht, Britannia. Timed to coincide with Prince William's 21st birthday this book will be a "must" for all Royal watchers. |

Every once and a
while a book will come along and rockets to the best sellers. Some even
become institutions (The Guinness
Book of Records comes to mind). I predict this book to become another.
Its packed with information about virtually everything from the supplier of bagpipes to the Queen to the lengths of shoelaces. It's a must for your reference shelf. Once you pick it up you won't want to put it down. Its entertaining, unpredictable and totally additive. |
