The Other Mitford - Pamela's Story, Dianne Alexander
10 Dianne Alexander The Other Mitford - Pamela's Story
The History Press 2012 075247121X / 9780752471211 Hardback New Book Ref A108 192 pages, with Illustrations
Pamela Jackson, nee Mitford, is perhaps the least well known of the illustrious Mitford sisters, and yet her story is just as captivating, and more revealing. Despite shunning the bright city lights that her sisters so desperately craved, she was very much involved in the activities of her extraordinary family, picking up the many pieces when things went disastrously wrong - which they so often did. Joining her sisters on many adventures, including their meeting with Adolf Hitler in Nazi Germany, Pamela quietly observed the bizarre, funny and often tragic events that took place around her. Through her eyes, we are given a view of the Mitfords never seen before. 'Loyal to the core,' she possessed 'the constancy and kindness that underpinned the wilder exploits of the Mitford family. Indeed, innocence, along with courage and kindness, was one of her remarkable qualities. But it was the innocence of a woman who had lived and suffered, loved and lost, and overcome adversity' Journalist Diana Alexander, was Pamela's friend for many years, and her book reveals the unknown Mitford, or, as her lifelong admirer John Betjeman described her, 'Gentle Pamela'..

11 Filkin, David Stephen Hawking's Universe
London, United Kingdom BBC Books 1997 0563383011 / 9780563383017 Hard Cover Very Good As New 9"By11"Tall
The companion to the popular PBS series. For everyone who bought A Brief History of Time (9 million so far) but had trouble understanding it, this is a simple, easily accessible explanation of the same ideasand an introduction to the people behind them. . Stephen Hawkings A Brief History of Time has sold over 9 million copies worldwide. Now, in everyday language, Stephen Hawkings Universe reveals step-by-step how we can all share his understanding of the cosmos, and our own place within it. Stargazing has never been the same since cosmologists discovered that galaxies are moving away from each other at an extraordinary speed. It was this understanding of the movement of galaxies that allowed scientists to develop a theory of how the universe was createdthe Big Bang theory. Working with this theory, Stephen Hawking and other physicists felt challenged to come up with a scientific picture that would tackle the fundamental question: what is the nature of the universe? Stephen Hawkings Universe charts this work and provides simple explanations for phenomena that arouse our curiosity. This work is a voyage of discovery with an astonishing set of conclusions that will enable us to understand how matter can be produced from nothing at all and will provide us with an explanation for the basis of our existence and that of everything around us

Big Louie and Me : Caravans, Curses and Cockfights, George Locke
13 George Locke Big Louie and Me : Caravans, Curses and Cockfights
University of Hertfordshire Press 2012 1907396829 / 9781907396823 Paperback New Book Ref Office 216 x 138 mm, 318 grams
In 1869 George's great grandmother Alice ran away with a Gypsy boy called Joe Locke, but he soon disappeared when he found out she was carrying a baby. Two years later, when she was sixteen, Alice married her cousin and bore many more children. At the age of eleven, unable to stand his stepfather's cruelty any longer, George's grandfather set out to search for the birth father he had never met. Passed from one community of Gypsies to another, after nine months he met a Gypsy woman who stared at him and said, 'You look exactly like my man'. When Joe heard the boy's story, he embraced him and told his wife, "Mercy, this is my eldest son and we're going to look after him". So begins George Locke's warm-hearted memoir of life in a very close-knit Gypsy community in the Black Country. George's relatives formed the tightest bonds around him, keeping the family safe from outsiders. His grandmother was known as Big Louie and a more formidable character you couldn't hope (or fear) to meet: four feet ten in every direction, Big Louie smoked a pipe from the age of three and had age-old knowledge of healing plants. No child could forget having Louie's cabbage syrup forced down their sore throat whilst she had them in a headlock with her fingers up their nose. George's father was the Sherengro or headman of the camp. A former bare-fist champion, he was a hard man but also kindness itself. The prejudice he suffered made him hate bullies and bigots. Nor would he tolerate any cruelty to animals. Yet as a boy George witnessed fighting between both men and animals and was also sometimes caught up in the shenanigans around these illegal fights, where large sums of money changed hands and bookies didn't always honour bets. From a lifetime teeming with incident, George picks out the best stories from the old days: escapades to curl your hair, run-ins with the gavvers (police), with gamekeepers, with Gypsy-haters. Yet at every turn there's great good humour and always a strong sense of right and wrong. Sadness, too, most poignantly in George's tragic love for Sylvy, a Gypsy girl born on the same day as himself and promised to him in marriage on that day. This is a book full of lore and quick wit and, above all, a rock-solid belief in family.

15 Guralnick, Peter Last Train to Memphis: Rise of Elvis Presley
London, United Kingdom Sphere Books Ltd 1995 0349106517 / 9780349106519 Pictorial Paper Covers Almost As New No Jacket
This is the first volume of a two-volume biography of Elvis Presley, a book that justifies the importance of "The King" to American music and culture. It covers Presley's rise up to his mother's death in 1958. The Presley displayed is bright, articulate, energetic - a young man in a hurry with a very real sense of himself and his art, a man with a disdain for convention and yet a yearning for genteel respectability. This is not the Elvis Presley of tabloid headlines and chat show notoriety. Instead, it restores Elvis to his music, telling the story of a young man who, at 19, emerged as a full-blown artist to the wonder of his friends and the world.
