Brian E Torode John Middleton - Victorian, Provincial Architect Accent 2008 9789539976253 1st Paperback New Book Ref A30 176 pages JOHN MIDDLETON (1820-1885) began his architectural career in Darlington, but later moved to Cheltenham where he designed five Anglican Churches for the town's growing population. From his practice in the town he accepted commissions for further work in neighbouring counties and in central Wales. His portfolio contains designs for mansions, hospitals, railway stations, parish schools and public schools, private residences and public buildings and monuments. Little has been written about John Middleton and although his name is familiar. In the places in which he worked, his private life and his interests have received little publicity and yet he had a wide circle of friends some of whom became well known national figures in the world of the Arts. As well as designing new buildings Middleton was also responsible for the restoration of many churches-and-his antiquarian pursuits were continued and developed by his son, John Henry: He was a close friend of William Morris and his circle and became nationally more famous than his father had been. His career and untimely death is also included in this volume. JOHN MIDDLETON was a committed Christian, a devoted family man who shunned publicity and deserves to be much better known than he is at present. I hope that this volume will do Justice to the man of whom David Verey wrote, "of all the local church architects living in the Victorian period, none is as prolific as Middleton, nor more talented, with perhaps the exception of Benjamin Bucknall."

Celebrating People, Places and Events Cheltenham Reardon Publishing 2009 1873877935 / 9781873877937 Paperback Ref A231 Maps by Brian White Cheltenham is associated with a wide variety of famous people and events, from the fields of sport, medicine and literature, from the worlds of stage and film, and from to those of industrial innovation and social reform. Some are important in the context of the town, others have much wider significance. Many will know of Dr. Edward Jenner's pioneering work on vaccination which led to the world-wide eradication of smallpox in 1980, but how many are aware that Jenner lived and worked in Cheltenham for 20 years?
