Sue Mayfield Real as Yesterday Sue Mayfield 2007 1st Edition Paperback New Book Signed by the author Six Months at Delancey Sue Mayfield was Writer-in-Residence at Delancey Hospital from October 2006 until March 2007. During that time she visited Delancey once a month with one of two musicians: in October, December and January, Jaye Woodfield, an accordion player; in November, February and March, Marie-France Riboulet, a harpist. While Jaye and Marie-France played, I chatted to patients, listening to their stories and in many cases writing them down. Working alongside the musicians was a lovely experience. Both players were enormously intuitive, adapting their repertoire to the patients' preferences and moods. The music had a powerful effect which I've tried to describe in the poem Real as Yesterday. Wonderful stories emerged - stories of ordinary and extraordinary things, stories of love and loss, of travel and discovery, of joy and sadness. I felt enormously privileged to be party to the telling of such stories and am grateful to all those who spoke to me, as well as to the staff at Delancey who tolerated and encouraged our presence on the wards, those six Mondays.
